We’re always searching for ways to keep our own kids active and engaged, and while activity days out are great, they can get expensive. So using our Kid Active products as inspiration, we’ve discovered 5 imaginative games that you can play at home with your kids, to get them excited about moving, exploring and learning. Have fun!
Let’s Explore: Lava Jump
This is a great game for playing outside on a warm day. You use pieces of paper or card to mark out areas on the floor, and your child jumps to each one avoiding the grass (or lava!). A trampoline adds an extra bit of fun to this game as they can jump higher!
Let’s Move: Spelling Boing
Add a bit of competition and suddenly exercise is a lot more fun! Encourage your kids to jump up and down on the trampoline as many times as they can in a minute, see if they can beat their score each day and keep a tally on a chart. If they’re finding that too easy, get them to jump up and down spelling their names with a letter for each bounce.
Let’s Create: Cardboard Creatures
If Christmas morning has taught us anything, it’s that our kids love the cardboard boxes too! There’s a whole world of fun at your fingertips if you remember to keep hold of any boxes and cereal packets you would usually throw out during the week. Create giant monster masks and tails from the cardboard for each end of the tunnel, then get the kids inside and see if they can make the monster move.
Let’s Move: Garden Olympics
Turning your garden into an obstacle course is a great way to use lots of different toys. It’s also an opportunity for kids to have a go at planning a route, getting creative with how they are going to make their way around. For example, you could time them to climb through the tunnel, before dressing up in their favourite costume and throwing a ball into a bucket. You could even get chocolate medals as a reward – they’ll have earned them!
Let’s Imagine: Indoor Camping
This game is great for letting their imaginations run wild. To turn your living room into a camping adventure, all you need is a pop up tent, a torch and some red and yellow craft paper to create a fake campfire. Huddle up close and sing campfire songs like “If You’re Happy And You Know It”– or make up your owns songs together!
All together now…
“If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands (clap clap)
If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands (clap clap)
If you’re happy and you know it, and you’ll really want to show it
If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands. (clap clap)”
And so on, with “stomp your feet”, “shout hurray”, and “do all three”. Get your little one up and dancing to all the movements in the song.
Once they’ve learned the lyrics, you could even try singing it in a round – don’t worry about getting it wrong!
